Shoes are more complicated than they look. What seems simple on the outside is made of many layers, materials and carefully thought-out parts. Here is what's inside a boot, piece by piece.
The upper
The upper is everything above the sole. It gives the boot its shape. We use leather chosen for durability and character, cut into panels and stitched together.
The lining
Inside, soft leather linings make the boot comfortable and breathable against the foot.
The last
Every shoe starts from the last, a foot-shaped form the leather is shaped around. It decides the fit, the shape of the toe and how the boot sits on the foot.
Hidden reinforcements
Between the upper and the lining, reinforcements at the heel and toe hold the shape. You never see them, but they keep the boot from collapsing with wear.
The insole and the sole
The sole is made of several layers, each with a job: grip, support and cushioning. The Cove Boot is Blake stitched. A single line of stitching runs from inside the boot through the upper, the insole and the sole, which keeps the profile slimmer.
The zipper, thread and adhesive
A zipper at the front closes the boot. Threads and adhesives quietly hold everything else together.
