'Echoes: 1998'
For our SS26 “Echoes: 1998”, Zoe and Lu are captured in the creative heart of Hande, a family owned leather goods company based in Madrid. Its workshop situates inside a sprawling building of over 150 individual units, each holding its own silent history.
It is here that the Del Barrio family, the backbone of Hande, continues a journey of craftsmanship since 1934. While their heritage spans nearly a century, the family established their roots in this specific building in 1998, turning this space into a sanctuary for a devotion now deeply ingrained in every item they manufacture.
Constructed in 1992, the building is situated in the iconic Polígono Industrial de Vallecas. The history of this structure is inseparable from the neighborhood itself, which stands as a testament to profound transformation. Until the 1950s, Vallecas was primarily covered in huertas (vegetable gardens). As Madrid rapidly industrialized, the area became one of the city's most vital economic engines, welcoming thousands of people seeking factory work.
In this series of photographs, the building’s character comes to life. Its massive six-story concrete structure still wears its original period colors, housing a blend of traditional elegance and industrial power. Marble staircases sit alongside high-capacity freight elevators—features designed to carry heavy machinery and logistics to the very top floors.
